DepositNow Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if DepositNow makes sense for me?

Any business that receives checks can benefit from depositing them remotely. It's quicker, safer and easier than making a trip to the bank and less expensive than using a courier. And with DepositNow, you can still get your checks to the bank even if you aren't located near a branch.

What kind of equipment and software will I need to install in order to deposit checks remotely?

All you need is a check scanner certified to work with BankServ's system. BankServ handles all the processing on its secure servers, so there’s no need to install any additional software on your computer. Just sign in to our server using your web browser.

Can I process anything other than personal and business checks with DepositNow?

Yes. Under the Check-21 Act, remote deposit also allows the processing of money orders, traveler’s checks, cashier's checks, government checks and warrants, and more.

I already have a scanner. Will it work to deposit checks, or do I need to buy a special one?

In order to comply with the Check-21 Act, scanners must meet certain rigid technical requirements published by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank. As such, most ordinary scanners will not work. BankServ also offers scanners by several other manufacturers that meet industry requirements. Click here to see some of our more popular options.

Will my check scanner work to scan anything besides checks?

Most check scanners currently on the market are only capable of capturing black-and-white images of checks. However, in September 2006, BankServ introduced the SB1000 check and document scanner, which also works as a full-color, two-sided scanner for ordinary media.

Do I have to change banks to use DepositNow?

You can continue with your current banking account; no change is necessary.  When you enroll, just advise BankServ where to deposit the funds. Your account information is stored behind firewalls, and your private information will never be used for any purpose other than processing your deposits.

How does DepositNow work with my bookkeeping software?

If  you are a QuickBooks® user, Deposit Now A/R is for you. In this version, DepositNow is integrated with QuickBooks, and you launch it from your accounts receivable screen within QuickBooks. As you scan checks, DepositNow A/R works with QuickBooks to automatically post your receivables — all in one step, saving you time and increasing the accuracy of your work.

If you use an accounting software system other than QuickBooks, DepositNow can create a file in most popular formats that you can import into your accounting system or Excel. Check back soon — BankServ plans to add interfaces for other major bookkeeping programs such as Microsoft Money and Peachtree.

If I deposit a check remotely and it bounces or turns out to be fraudulent, what happens? Is it any different from what would happen if I had deposited it the regular way?

It is not different — banking rules regarding the handling of fraudulent checks are the same, regardless of how the checks are deposited. However, DepositNow may provide you with a faster notice if a check bounces or is fraudulent. If a check is returned for insufficient funds, it can simply be submitted electronically a second time.

What do I do with the check after I scan it?

Save it for 14 days in case of technical problems, then shred it. Images are securely stored in BankServ's computers and are accessible by you over the Internet 24 hours a day.

How difficult is it to learn how to use DepositNow? Will I need any special training?
